# Search

> Find a guest, a booking or a room from any screen, and check in, take a payment or open the calendar from the result.

Search finds a guest, a booking, a room, a property or a task from any screen, and lets you act on what it finds without opening the page first.

## Opening it

* **Ctrl K** (**⌘ K** on a Mac), **Alt+S** (**⌥S**), or the search box at the top of the screen.
* **Alt+N** (**⌥N**) starts a new booking and **Alt+T** (**⌥T**) shows the calendar at today, from any screen. On the calendar the two work in place — see [Calendar](/en/calendar).
* **Alt+A** (**⌥A**) opens the [assistant](/en/assistant). When what you typed in search reads like a question — more than four words, or starting with **?** — its last row hands it to the assistant: **Tab**, or **Enter** when nothing was found.

These keys do nothing while you are typing in a field, and Ctrl+Alt (AltGr on a Windows keyboard, which types ș and ț on the Romanian layout) is left to the keyboard.

## What it finds

Type at least two characters. Search looks in every property you have access to; the property selected in the sidebar comes first, and a result from another property shows that property's name.

* **Best match** lists what equals what you typed: a booking number, a channel reference (for example a Booking.com confirmation), an email, a phone number or a room name. A phone number is found however it was written — "0721 234 567" finds "+40 721 234 567" once you have typed seven digits.
* A booking reference must be typed exactly: one character off finds nothing rather than another guest's booking.
* **#room 204** looks only among rooms, **#book** among bookings, **#guest** among guests, **#prop** among properties and **#task** among tasks.

A room shows its type and property, and how housekeeping left it (Dirty, Clean, Inspected) or that it is out of service. If the note **Search is running on the database alone** appears, the search service is slow or down: exact matches are still found, without tolerance for typos.

With nothing typed, **Recently opened** lists the records you opened from search lately, followed by your saved and recent searches.

## Acting on a result

Move with **↑** and **↓**, open the highlighted result with **Enter**, or open one of the first nine with **Ctrl 1**–**9** (**⌘ 1**–**9**).

On a booking or a room, **Tab** (or **→** at the end of what you typed) shows what you can do with it, right under it; **←** or **Esc** hides it again. The pointer can use the arrow on the result's right.

| Action | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Check in** | Asks once more — press **Enter** again — then checks the guest in. If the check-in is refused, the message says why. |
| **Check out…** | Opens the booking's panel, where Check out asks about an early departure. |
| **Take payment…** | Shows what is owed and opens the booking's panel to take it. |
| **Assign room…** | Opens the booking's panel to pick the room. |
| **Open in calendar** | Shows the timeline at the stay's arrival, or today for a room. |

An action you cannot take right now stays in the list, greyed, with the reason beside it — the same reason the booking's panel gives, for example "Assign a room before checking in" or "The channel collected this stay's payment". An action your role does not allow is not shown at all. Acting on a result from another property moves the sidebar to that property first.

Search is kept per browser: your recent searches and records are cleared when you sign out or switch organization.
